Background of the study
Phonetic variation in digital content is increasingly observable on social media platforms where audio features play a pivotal role. In Nigeria, TikTok and Instagram have emerged as major platforms showcasing distinct audio trends that influence pronunciation, intonation, and speech rhythm. TikTok, known for its short-form videos, encourages users to experiment with voice modulation, sound effects, and accent shifts, while Instagram audio trends often accompany visual content such as Stories and Reels (Adebayo, 2023). These platforms provide a rich tapestry of spoken expression that reflects both global influences and local dialectal characteristics. The study compares audio trends on TikTok and Instagram to reveal how digital media fosters phonetic innovation and variability. By analyzing user-generated content, the research aims to uncover the socio-cultural factors driving these changes and assess their implications for traditional phonetic norms in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024). This investigation contributes to a deeper understanding of digital phonetics and the evolving nature of spoken language in online environments.
Statement of the problem
There is limited comparative research on how different social media platforms influence phonetic variation in Nigeria. While TikTok and Instagram are both prominent, few studies have examined the distinct audio trends they promote. The lack of comprehensive analysis leaves questions about the extent to which digital media drives phonetic innovation and how these trends compare with traditional speech patterns. This study seeks to fill that gap by systematically comparing TikTok and Instagram audio trends and their impact on phonetic variability (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of phonetic variation induced by digital audio trends in Nigeria, offering insights into the evolving nature of spoken language in the digital age (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on audio trends in TikTok and Instagram within Nigerian digital discourse and does not extend to other media or offline speech.
